Dr.  Maurizio Pilu has built his career at the intersection of AI, emerging technology and industry, playing a leading role in major corporate, government and institutional programmes bringing advanced technology into complex industrial settings.

He consults with boards and leadership teams on AI and technology-driven transformation, covering strategy, innovation, governance and delivery (www.enexem.com).

Before,  he spent nearly a decade at Lloyd’s Register, where he helped establish the organisation’s first global digital innovation practice. As part of that, he co-founded Safetytech Accelerator Limited and served as its first Managing Director, collaborating with dozens of corporates and technology vendors on AI and emerging technology strategies and transformation projects, and becoming a leading advocate for innovation in safety-critical industries and safetytech as a distinct discipline.

Previously, Dr Pilu  helped establish and served as an Executive Director of Digital Catapult, the UK’s national centre for deep tech. His earlier career includes roles at Innovate UK, where he led several multi-million-pound emerging technology investments, at Hewlett Packard Laboratories as a senior AI and computer vision researcher and inventor, and in deep-tech venture capital across the UK, Europe and Southeast Asia.

Dr Pilu holds a PhD in Artificial Intelligence (Edinburgh), an Executive MBA (Bath) and an MSc in Electronic Engineering (Politecnico di Milano). He is a Fellow of the IET, the inventor of over 20  granted US patents, and has published over 30 peer-reviewed papers in computer vision. He speaks regularly at industry conferences and his work has featured in trade and mainstream media.

He has served on boards and advisory bodies across government-backed institutions, charities, deep-tech businesses and regulators, and is currently a Trustee at Blue Ventures, a global conservation charity, and at the Engineering Council, the regulator of the engineering profession..
